As an incoming MSU student – let alone a transfer student – many fear that they do not have everything planned out. Starting off at Concordia University, located about 30 minutes outside of Chicago, freshman Brooklyn Gromko kicked off her educational journey with a major in elementary education. Like many students, she did not feel solidified in her decision right away. Not wanting to be confined to one job in elementary education, she began exploring other options when she took an interest in marketing.

“I didn’t want to be confined to one thing, and marketing is so broad. I thought you can’t really do a lot with elementary education,” said Gromko.

This decision began to shape Gromko’s path to MSU. After initially dismissing MSU as part of her college plans, she along with her Concordia roommate at the time, Avery Millspaugh, made the transfer to MSU together after their freshman year.

“She definitely influenced me to come here,” Gromko said.

Upon arrival, Gromko experienced a similar fear of many students regarding the competition in MSU’s Broad College of Business. She turned her attention to what she thought was a similar major: creative advertising. Going into the major, Gromko initially expected a stronger focus on art and as she immersed herself in the program, she realized she had made the right decision.

“I like that there is a lot of creative freedom in it, yet it is also mixed with a lot of logical thinking and strategy,” said Gromko.

Along with Gromko, she noted several other transfer students who have switched to the creative advertising major. Many students may feel lost and compare themselves to others who follow a strict path or plan, but there are students everywhere who have transferred and changed for the better. While many may worry about the changes in their path, it often takes a winding one to find what feels right and to find a place that inspires them. Gromko’s journey illustrates that students all over share similar experiences, and although it may take time, it is worth it once they find the right fit.
