The public relations program at Michigan State University is renowned for emphasizing professional growth, media relations and strategic communication. Through projects and internships, the curriculum gives students practical experience that helps them develop the skills necessary for a successful career in public relations. 2025 MSU graduate and PR minor, Keller Cowperthwaite, is one such example. She participated in Spartython and TEDxMSU and is enthusiastic about using these platforms to change the world.

TEDxMSU features a diverse lineup of speakers, including professors, students, alumni and community members, who share insights on various topics ranging from science, technology, and arts to social issues and personal growth. The event aims to foster intellectual curiosity, creativity and meaningful dialogue while showcasing the unique perspectives and talents of the MSU community. Through TEDxMSU, Cowperthwaite worked as the external outreach coordinator, where she was responsible for building and maintaining relationships between an organization and external stakeholders.

Keller Cowperthwaite, MSU graduate and PR minor, applied her coursework to MSU philanthropic organizations.

Spartython is a philanthropic dance marathon supporting local children’s hospitals and allowed Cowperthwaite to contribute to meaningful cause through the partnerships committee. Both experiences reflect Cowperthwaite’s dedication to using PR as a tool for creating change and fostering connections.

“You can also meet friends while building yourself or setting yourself up for success,” said Cowperthwaite. ‘It is never too late to start.”

As a public relations student, Cowperthwaite developed vital skills that benefitted her work on the executive board of her clubs. PR training has a strong emphasis on event promotion, media outreach and clear communication — all of which are critical for efficiently overseeing club operations and raising its profile. Cowperthwaite has powerful knowledge on how to communicate effectively and cultivate a good rapport with both internal and external stakeholders.

“I refine my PR strategies and then kind of tailor how they can expand their impact and then get the awareness that they need,” said Cowperthwaite.

Cowperthwaite’s ability to market the club’s activities, maintain its good name, and project a consistent, polished image would be beneficial in fostering member participation and club success.
