Jonathan Clem Brings PR Expertise to MSUMA E-Board Leadership

Clem, a 2025 PR grad with business minor, served as director of philanthropy

Jonathan Clem, a 2025 PR graduate, is often recognized for his vibrant personality and ability to network in any setting. As the 2024-2025 director of philanthropy for the Michigan State University Marketing Association, he found the perfect outlet for his talents. MSUMA, a student-run organization, fosters networking, philanthropy and socialization, welcoming students from all majors. As a transfer student, Clem says he saw it as an ideal way to make connections and get involved.

Clem highlights the value of a diverse skillset, particularly in the field of PR. Many PR students, including himself, pursue a business minor through the highly competitive Broad College of Business. He says joining MSUMA helped him refine his soft skills and gain confidence in networking.

“I feel like a lot of my success in my work can be attributed to the things that I’ve taken away from MSUMA,” he said.

Clem notes that before joining MSUMA, interviews intimidated him, but now he enjoys them. The weekly member meetings provide a safe space to practice introductions and elevator pitches. Clem’s professional growth highlights the organization’s role in building essential skills through community support.

The transition to an e-board position as allowed Clem to enhance his writing and communication abilities. He regularly crafted outreach emails, drafted articles and connected with industry professionals. With a minor in business and aspirations in public relations, Clem aims to carve a niche in the industry. He is considering roles in media training or crisis communications, with a dream of working in the entertainment sector.

The benefits of MSUMA extend beyond personal development. They have significantly aided Clem in securing three internships, including one with AARP.

He finds connecting with fellow members for advice and insight rewarding, enriching his learning experience through diverse backgrounds. Despite the challenges of the competitive Broad College, Clem remains committed to enhancing his skillset.

“Public relations, journalism and marketing all overlap, and adding a business perspective helps tie everything together,” said Clem.

Clem’s journey through MSUMA highlights how involvement in student organizations can profoundly impact personal and professional growth. From sharpening soft skills to building valuable connections, the experiences gained have given Clem a solid foundation for a successful career in communications.
