At Michigan State University, students are encouraged to explore their passions. One exemplary student who embodies this spirit is Gianna Bruno, a senior majoring in advertising management with double minors in business and entrepreneurship. As the vice president of the newly founded Music Business Organization, Bruno is making moves in both the advertising and music industries, blending her love for music with her academic pursuits.

Bruno’s interest in the music industry began in middle school and grew during high school, intensifying further during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Music has always been an outlet for me,” Bruno said. “I discovered so many artists during that time, and I realized how deeply music connects people.”

This realization sparked her desire to learn more about the industry, leading her to join the Music Business Organization at MSU. Bruno has shown her leadership skills and commitment since joining by advancing to the role of vice president.

“I was eager to get involved and learn about the different opportunities within the music industry,” she said.

Her enthusiasm is infectious, and she is driven by a desire to create a supportive community for fellow music lovers at MSU. Bruno credits her advertising management courses for shaping her approach to challenges in the music industry.

“The account management side of advertising has taught me that nothing is set in stone,” she said. “Just like in advertising, the music industry is unpredictable — people can be discovered overnight. So obviously, you must be on your toes all the time.”

Her coursework has equipped her with valuable insights into audience targeting and analytics, skills she sees as directly applicable to her future career.

Looking ahead, Bruno says she envisions her role in the music industry evolving as she takes on new challenges.

“I’m excited to start this year’s meetings and connect with industry professionals,” she said. “I would love to further spread the love of music with others and make more friends who also have this passion for music.”

Her desire to help others explore this field is at the forefront of her ambitions. When asked about her preparation for post-graduate life, Bruno said she feels confident in the skills she has gained.

“My courses have included speakers from various agencies, giving us a closer look at the importance of building connections,” she said. “In both advertising and music, who you know can make a significant difference.”

This perspective shows the close ties between both industries: advertising and music. As she approaches graduation, Bruno remains open to the possibilities ahead, whether in advertising, music or beyond.
