Michigan State University master’s student, Octaviano “Junior” Blanco has firsthand experience overcoming obstacles and proving your worth to the most important person — yourself.

Blanco is a master’s student, studying advertising and public relations. As a fall 2023 graduate, he received his bachelor’s in advertising management with his sights set on graduate school.

Blanco began graduate school six years after starting his educational journey at MSU as a kinesiology student. After facing academic challenges during his first semester and taking a short leave from the school, Blanco met with advisors in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences to create a plan to return the following semester.

After advocating for himself and working hard in his classes upon his return to MSU, Blanco earned his place on the Dean’s List spring semester 2019. He officially made the switch to advertising management at the beginning of his sophomore year.

Blanco was a member of the fraternity, Sigma Lambda Beta.

Much like many other MSU students, Blanco had to navigate his education during the COVID-19 pandemic. By pushing through adversity and connecting with those around him, Blanco was able to gain new experiences and prove to himself that he can do what he sets his mind to.

Joining his fraternity, Sigma Lambda Beta, gave Blanco a chance to be a part of a community.

“I just felt like I was on top of the world, and after crossing I told myself; I can do anything,” said Blanco.

Balancing school and work, Blanco also currently holds two marketing jobs on campus where he gets to employ the skills he learned in his undergraduate studies.

A position was created for Blanco at MSU’s Diversity Research Network, where he creates campaign flyers sent out in their newsletter. He also produces and posts social media content for recreational sports facilities on campus, including IM East and West. These opportunities give him a chance to practice his passions.

“My strong suit is with social media…that is what I really want to get into after I graduate,” said Blanco.

Starting his master’s in fall 2024 has given Blanco a chance to reflect on his journey, and he describes this in one word: resilience.

“Being resilient is one of the things that got me through college,” said Blanco.
