Public Relations major, Annabelle Julien, is building on her work amplifying students’ voices through her internship with MSU’s Office of Inclusive Excellence and Impact to an even larger platform: Michigan State University’s online newsroom, MSU Today.

“We’re really trying to make sure that we’re spreading a message of inclusion, of belonging and acceptance here at Michigan State through minority voices and also just all voices on campus,” Julien said. “Within those marginalized groups. they feel like they have a platform of belonging and can share their stories freely, confidently, and feel like they are supported.”

As a communications intern for MSU Today, Julien works for the Office of Inclusive Excellence and Impact at MSU. By way of PR, Julien exercises her skills and creates new opportunities for her personal growth and success of the publication.

“This is a communications position, and I’ve done writing. But we don’t really do anything press release-wise. So, I am trying to start a new initiative where we include student publications and send out monthly releases with important events that are going on that align with our calendar and our content that we’re creating,” said Julien.

Outside of her internship, Julien works as a student supervisor at the Broad Art Museum, where she helps bridge the communication between managers and student employees. She also serves as an undergraduate learning assistant for an integrated social science course, offering academic support to fellow students.

Julien says writing for MSU Today brings new opportunities for her mission to promote diversity on campus. Her and the team focus on inclusivity and the importance of immersive experiences to broaden their perspective.

“I’m going to cover a disability summit for MSU Today, and that’s something that I wouldn’t have even known existed until I had this internship,” Julien said. “It really just helps me learn more about people that I wouldn’t have otherwise connected with.”

Julien’s internship demonstrates the real-world impact of public relations and the difference one voice can make. Her story is a powerful reminder for students and professionals alike to seek opportunities that challenge perspective and foster professional growth.
