A few summers ago, MSU ad management student, Tyson Nichols, was just another high school student lugging tents and tables at youth sports camps. Today, he selects inventory, leads a sales team and delivers more than $124,000 in merchandise revenue — all before college graduation.

What started as a summer job has turned into a nationwide leadership experience for Nichols, who also minors in business and entrepreneurship.

As head of onsite sales for FlexWork Sports Management, a company partnering with professional athletes to host youth camps, Nichols has transformed classroom lessons into hands-on success.

His journey began when his cousin, the CEO of FlexWork, offered him a chance to help at local camps. What started as simple setup work, quickly turned into an inside look at how youth camps run. Nichols found himself paying attention to the sales process, customer flow and how decisions were made.

At Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, also known as the Big House, Tyson Nichols connected with Detroit Lions running back, Jahmyr Gibbs, during a FlexWork Sports youth camp.

“Back in high school, I was a member of the equipment crew doing things like setting up tents,” Nichols said. “Now, I’m the one deciding what we sell, how we price it and how we make sure everything runs smoothly.”

Today, Nichols travels the country, working with professional athletes such as NFL running back Jahmyr Gibbs. As lead of onsite sales, he manages product selection, pricing, customer engagement and team performance. In 2024, Nichols generated nearly $124,500 in personal gross sales, directly applying class lessons to strategies that increased both sales and team effectiveness.

“I’ve been able to apply things like consumer behavior and marketing strategies that we talk about in classes,” Nichols said. “Being hands-on shows me the real human side behind every decision.”

Nichols says that by observing emotion, trust and timing at work, he’s gained a new understanding of advertising. While he learns the theory in class, his job lets him see how those ideas actually influence purchases in real-world situations.

He says ADV 342: Account Planning and Research was his most influential class, giving him practical experience with focus groups and real data. The course offers students a clear path to turn classroom concepts into real results.

From selecting merchandise to engaging with parents and young athletes, Nichols draws directly from his coursework to make meaningful connections. Before each camp, he steps up to the microphone to introduce himself and the event — something he’s learned is crucial to building trust.

“Once people trust you, they are more likely to buy from you,” he said. “It’s all about building relationships.”Nichols says he plans to continue building a career in sales, supported by the advertising skills he’s developed.
