Laura “La” Murphy, a Michigan State University advertising alumna, exemplifies the power of dedication, networking and continuously pursuing growth.

Murphy always knew her career path: advertising. Growing up, her father worked in marketing at General Motors. She says she was inspired by campaigns like Chevrolet’s “Heartbeat of America.” With early exposure, she set her sights on MSU’s College of Communication Arts and Sciences. From the beginning, she felt fortunate to have her father guiding her. She explained how she landed two crucial internships at communications agencies during her college career, which eventually led to her first full-time role at Foote, Cone & Belding as an account executive.

The advertising world then was pre-digital. Despite the shift in the industry toward digital platforms, her MSU advertising foundation provided her with the tools to adapt. Murphy honed her skills at renowned companies like McCann Worldgroup and Microsoft, leading her to her current position at Google.

Murphy’s journey to Google is a testament to the importance of networking, building relationships and continually learning. She credits much of her success to being someone people wanted to work with, emphasizing that cultivating professional connections can open doors.

“It’s about keeping relationships going, being kind, and taking every opportunity to learn from others,” Murphy said.

She makes sure to give back to the next generation of Spartans, reminding us that “Spartans Will.” Murphy is deeply involved in the MSU community, particularly as the business advisor for Women in Advertising and Communications and as president of Adcraft Detroit.

Her passion for mentorship is unlike most. She has a letter and a drawing that have yet to move from her desk, given to her by a mentee she had years ago.

“They inspire me every day, and that is something money can’t buy,” said Murphy.

She spends time on campus with WAC, has guest taught classes and has participated in speed mentoring.

“I leave there just feeling uplifted because it reminds me of where I started,” said Murphy.

Her commitment to mentoring goes beyond professional growth. Murphy encourages students to show up, be present, and be authentic every day.

“You must stand out. Be someone people remember, whether through a smile, a unique idea, or simply being someone who listens,” said Murphy.

This advice is something she practices in her daily life

Networking, internships and standing out as a genuine and committed individual can lead to amazing career opportunities. Murphy’s journey reflects how staying true to oneself and remaining open to learning can turn dreams into reality.

As an alumna, Murphy continues to inspire and guide the next generation of Spartans, proving that giving back is not only rewarding but an essential part of the professional journey.
