Senior PR Director and Major, Grace Danison, Lifts the Curtain on TEDxMSU
By: Samantha Szafran
Grace Danison is a TEDxMSU member and PR senior. She says when she joined the organization, she loved it and has gained more connections – and friends – than she ever imagined.
“We have literally everybody under every major on TED, and they all say the same thing that they love the experience, and they feel like it has benefited them,” said Danison.
With 1,000+ student organizations, MSU students can explore their unique interests beyond their majors. Campus groups like TEDxMSU welcome students from all backgrounds, offering leadership opportunities for diverse majors.
TEDxMSU is a nonprofit, student-run organization with a unique mission to give the audience an experience of a real TED talk. Their goal is to encourage everyone to open their minds to new ideas that spark creativity and enhance their understanding of the world.
The organization’s year-round efforts include securing partners and sponsors, planning events and managing budgets. Members collaborate with the university, faculty, staff, fellow students, local businesses and the East Lansing community.
Danison says her work in TEDxMSU directly correlates with her academic studies.
“We are in that business clientele-setting, trying to get the end goal of being partners and working together,” Danison said.
Looking for a challenge, Danison says she ran for e-board and found her calling as PR director, which she describes as the perfect outlet for her skills and aspirations.
Dansion says TEDxMSU is a great way to network, enhance career opportunities, and build your resumes – for all majors. Danison said her experience in this organization is the conversation starter in all of her interviews and is guiding her to a future job.
TEDxMSU has four other teams alongside the PR team: marketing, finance, logistics and speakers. This diverse structure ensures that there’s a place for students of all majors to get involved and contribute their own perspectives.
Becoming a TEDxMSU member can benefit a student in the career world, as well as benefiting their own creativity and thinking patterns.
“Everyone should apply and become a member and/or leader,” said Danison. “Come in with a lot of positive energy and excitement about working with other members; being a team player is the biggest thing.”
