If you are looking to secure a job in creative sports media, here’s a harsh reality check: relying on only one skill or specialty won’t be enough to get you there. Derek Blalock, a 2015 Michigan State creative advertising graduate and current graphic designer for the NBA’s Houston Rockets, is a perfect example of this reality. The modern sports creative industry is more demanding and calls for individuals who are creative in multiple respects.

Blalock didn’t start his career with a clear plan. He originally worked for The State News, MSU’s campus and community newspaper, where he learned photography, PR basics, social media management and eventually found sports media. He credits his time there, along with his ad creative coursework, for learning some of the fundamentals he carries with him to this day.

“Everything you learn adds to everything else,” he said. “You can’t just design without understanding social [media]. You can’t take photos without knowing what designers need. It’s all connected.”

MSU creative advertising alum, Derek Blalock’s story is a powerful reminder that the people who get hired are the people who keep learning.

After graduating, Blaclock spent nearly a decade developing his creative range through graphic design roles, photography jobs, content creation and digital projects. This experience became the foundation of his portfolio, which ultimately landed him his position with the Houston Rockets.

The hiring process was heavily portfolio driven, so he says this proved extremely beneficial for him.

In his role with the Houston Rockets, each of these skills are essential to being successful within his role. When a big moment happens, like a milestone, a major tradeoff, or a playoff win, the creative and graphic design team has just minutes to create something polished and intentional to keep the fans engaged. Blalock starts by finding the story he wants to tell, then uses his wide skillset to shape the content. Through his different work experiences, he says he has developed a knack for understanding content and knowing what will perform well.

“It doesn’t matter the job, just find the skill. Find the way the skills within that role can help you get to where you actually want to be,” he said.

Blalock’s journey is a reminder to always be expanding your skillset. It’s less about mastering one specific skill and more about gaining a basic understanding of as many skills as you can.

“The people who get hired are the people who keep learning,” he said. “You have so many tools available to you, so take advantage of them.”
