Hadley Urrutia is not your average college student. She juggles a full-time course load, three jobs, and the honors program at Michigan State University. These positions allow her to explore her creativity and love for creative advertising and graphic design. But maintaining this balance didn’t come easily — it takes time, dedication and discipline.

Urrutia began her journey at MSU as a marketing major but soon realized it wasn’t the right fit. Switching to creative advertising and graphic design allowed her to get more hands-on experience toward something that felt more fitting to her passion.

Urrutia is an undergraduate learning assistant for CAS 112, where she helps lead students to success on their upcoming assignments.

During her journey, she faced doubt, uncertainty and comparison, which are common struggles for many college students. However, she says she has stayed committed to the many opportunities that MSU led her to.

“I tried to take as many opportunities as I can,” Urrutia said.

One of her jobs, working as a graphic designer for Michigan State’s Student Life and Engagement, played a big role in her development, and her mentors pushed her to success. Balancing a full-time academic schedule with three jobs required strong time management, responsibility and self-discipline. She says her planner and to-do lists were lifesavers in keeping her on track and staying organized.

Her typical schedule includes morning classes before heading to her position as an undergraduate learning assistant. After that, she works her shift at Student Life and Engagement, followed by an evening or weekend shift at the Wharton Center.

“I try to make it as easy for myself as possible, so I don’t get too overwhelmed. I plan as much as I can if I know I have a busy week,” Urrutia said.

Regardless of her busy schedule, she prioritizes taking time for herself by taking a night off from schoolwork or spending time with friends. She says for her, it is critical for maintaining a healthy balance.

Post-grad, Urrutia says she hopes to secure a creative position somewhere in Michigan.

“I’m waiting to see what the future holds,” she said.

For those starting out or struggling with self-doubt, Urrutia shares some words of encouragement.

“If you get a position or an opportunity, you deserve it,” she said. “You are worthy of every opportunity that comes your way. As long as you work hard and do your best, you’ll get there; just be confident in yourself.”
