Aleksey Leybin, an advertising alumnus specializing in studio art, graduated in 2005 and knows firsthand how crucial networking is in landing a job post-graduation. His connections and ultimately what lead him to his current role at Meta.

“Networking is everything,” Leybin said. “It’s not just about who you know, but who knows you.”

Leybin enjoyed his time at MSU, but after graduating, Leybin faced the challenge many recent graduates encounter: standing out in a competitive job market. Instead of solely relying on online applications, he leveraged LinkedIn, alumni networks and industry events to expand his opportunities.

“I realized that sending out applications wasn’t enough,” he said. “Reaching out to people, having conversations and making genuine connections opened doors I didn’t even know existed.”

Leybin’s approach paid off, leading him to a key opportunity that set the stage for his current position at Meta. Through persistent networking, Leybin now contributes to one of the largest digital platforms in the world, WhatsApp. He has been a part of many award-winning campaigns for WhatsApp. At Meta, he applies his communication and branding expertise to support marketing initiatives, helping shape the way businesses connect with their audiences.

“People want to hire individuals they trust and feel connected to,” he said. “A strong recommendation can sometimes outweigh years of experience.”

In addition to networking, Leybin emphasizes the importance of personal branding. He kept his LinkedIn profile updated, shared industry insights and engaged with professionals in his field. He even recommends building and creating your own personal website. These efforts made him more visible to recruiters and potential employers.

“Your online presence is your digital handshake,” he said. “Make sure it reflects your skills, interests and professional personality.”

Now thriving at Meta, Leybin continues to build relationships and explore new opportunities within the industry. His journey is a testament to how strategic networking and a strong personal brand can lead to career success.

“Start building your network now,” Leybin said. “The relationships you invest in today could shape your career tomorrow.”
