At Michigan State University, the Public Relations Student Society of America serves as a crucial organization for aspiring public relations professionals. Through its commitment to professional development and community-building, PRSSA offers students valuable opportunities to enhance their skills, network with professionals and participate in meaningful projects.

“I served as the communications liaison between our chapter and our parent organization, the Central Michigan Public Relations Society of America,” said Izzy Kang, 2024-2025 president. “My main responsibility is to facilitate communication with professionals who advise our chapter and to enhance our mentorship program.”

Kang’s leadership reflects a desire to refresh the organization, which had previously experienced a lack of engagement. This dedication to progress was a common theme amongst the other e-board members, who have also witnessed the positive shifts within PRSSA.

Whitney Byard, the 2024-2025 e-board vice president, focused on strengthening alumni relations and expanding the mentorship program.

“Our role is to keep in touch with alumni and develop a strong mentorship program,” Byard said.

This effort not only builds connections with industry veterans, but also ensures that current members gain access to networking opportunities. Byard’s role is a blend of communications and relationship building, which is essential for continuing the organization’s growth and success.

Amanda Vogel, served in a role new for the 2024-2025 school year, media and events coordinator. She was responsible for managing social media and planning club events.

“I ran our Instagram, created graphics and communicated updates to our members,” Vogel said.

Vogel’s role extended beyond digital presence; she also organized events that provided members with practical experiences, such as agency tours and conferences. By facilitating these interactions, Vogel contributed to hands-on learning that PR students need to excel in their careers.

“When we were members, the club was quite different,” Vogel said. “We wanted to provide more opportunities for growth and involvement.”

With new opportunities for growth and engagement, the club has transformed into a more engaging and supportive environment for dues-paying and general members alike. The 2024-2025 e-board members emphasized the importance of their roles in enhancing the student experience within PRSSA.

“Being on the e-board provides incredible networking opportunities and helps build a robust resume,” Byard said. “It’s like a mini internship, giving you experience in event planning, communication and leadership.”

Additionally, serving on the e-board can count toward MSU students’ 250-hour PR Field Experience, a graduation requirement for PR Majors. Moreover, the connections made through PRSSA extend beyond the university.

“We have a whole book of connections we can turn to at any moment. It’s great to help our peers make those connections, too,” said Kang.

PRSSA at MSU is a resourceful organization that not only helps students secure internships and jobs but also fosters a strong sense of community, professional development, and leadership growth within the field of public relations.
