In our digitally connected world, one student took charge, bridging the disconnect she noticed within our campus. By introducing Michigan State University’s first Digital Marketing Organization, Megha Bhatia, a senior marketing major with a public relations minor, is creating new opportunities for her fellow AD+PR students to jump into the fast-paced and hectic world of digital marketing.

As the president and founder of DMO, Bhatia provides a lively environment for students to practice and improve their skills while setting herself up for a successful and bright future. Early in her college career, she recognized the need for marketing organizations focused on digital media and the glamorous industries she imagined pursuing.

“I saw that there is a need for students like me who are creative and want to go down the creative route rather than corporate,” Bhatia said. “People like me needed a creative outlet to practice what we’re learning in school.”

After gathering other students with similar visions and creating a reliable team, Bhatia officially brought DMO to life in the spring of 2024. As president, she manages many teams, including PR, finance, events and more, while also being responsible for creating relationships for the club. She utilizes her personal and professional relationships to grow DMO’s impressive network of connections, providing club members — and herself — with excellent networking opportunities.

DMO offers dues-paying student members valuable experiences to exercise skills and knowledge learned in the classroom in real-world situations. Through leadership positions and social media, as well as resume and skill-based workshops including influencer marketing, students strengthen their chances of breaking into this fast-paced, competitive industry. DMO hosts meetings featuring industry professionals from companies such as Warner Brothers and Nike, fostering networking between MSU students and major corporations that could lead to internships or other career possibilities. The organization is not only a notable addition to a resume but also allows its members to start or add to their portfolio.

When reflecting on DMO’s journey from an idea to a reality, Bhatia says she recognizes how this experience has had a positive impact on her life. Professionally, she says, she has gained various new connections and honed her ability to lead. Taking on the role of president has taught her how to manage a group of people while also learning to “let go.” Bhatia also credits DMO with helping her find her people and create lasting relationships.

“For people who do want to go into digital marketing or PR, I think the biggest thing is seizing every opportunity and not just saying that you’re going to do it, but actually taking that first step,” said Bhatia.
