As the sun sets every Wednesday afternoon, young women on college campuses nationwide gather to embrace fitness and wellness among a supportive community known as CHAARG (Changing Health, Attitudes, and Actions to Recreate Girls). The transition from high school to college can be challenging for some students, but many join one of the thousands of organizations and clubs offered at MSU. Through a couple of Facebook ads and MSU group chats, advertising creative student, Kyra Dutkiewicz discovered the MSU CHAARG community.

As a wellness community that can be found around college campuses across the country, CHAARG is designed to empower and support college-aged women at all fitness levels. They meet once a week to work out together, with exercises ranging from kickboxing to Pilates, from cardio dance to HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training).

“We do workouts anyone can do, but it’s also social,” said Dutkiewicz, “We have formal, retreat, small group socials and dinners.”

Dutkiewicz joined during her freshman year, but as a junior her commitment and involvement in CHAARG has only grown stronger. This spring, she joined the CHAARG Membership Committee in hopes of inspiring those younger than her.

“Younger girls will look up to me as a good role model for CHAARG, because of the impact CHAARG has had on me,” said Dutkiewicz, “I’ve found some really amazing people I look up to who have had a positive impact on my life, both older and younger; they are just my best friends.”

CHAARG also gives Dutkiewicz the opportunity to showcase her advertising creative skills by recruiting freshmen through her CHAARG Instagram account, creating and distributing print ads, releasing emails and newsletters, and engaging with students around campus. Through this promotional work she learned the importance of customer service, the strength of communication and the power of social media.

“All my classes have been beneficial for recruiting people, from psychology to communications, measuring how people interact and engage with advertisements, to creating headlines and copywriting tools,” said Dutkiewicz.
