In spring 2024, enthusiastic AD+PR students, ranging from freshman to seniors, traveled to GroupM’s Detroit location to learn from agency professionals outside of the classroom, at the world’s leading media investment company. Students were greeted with open arms by employees who shared knowledge from their real-world industry experiences.

GroupM is WPP’s media investment group with a mission to shape the next era of media, where advertising works better for people. AD+PR students engaged during a panel discussion, day-in-the-life examples and a breakdown of the company’s positions.

“Kassandra Corrujedo, an advertising creative major, traveled to GroupM with ComArtSci to learn about career opportunities.”

Kassandra Corrujedo studies creative advertising, with a minor in both public relations and graphic design. Corrujedo was one of a few AD+PR students selected to travel to Detroit and learn from the seasoned professionals at GroupM.

“It gets your nerves out of the way so when you’re an actual adult post-grad, you’ll be better trained to interact with professionals in the industry,” said Corrujedo. “In the classroom, they teach you the etiquette, but you don’t know how to act until you’re actually in the situation.”

GroupM’s HR team gave the visiting students an idea of what their internship program and associate post-graduation positions would look like. The agency offers a wide range of media planning and buying positions that align with the studies of the AD+PR students.

Employees gave insightful information on the selection process, qualifications for the roles and responsibilities they would take on. These elements broaden a student’s perspective, allowing them to explore beyond the walls of the ComArtSci Building.

These immersion trips, planned by the ComArtSci Career Center, allow AD+PR students to picture themselves in an agency setting and absorb information on AD+PR professions from a new perspective. Students learn how to network and explore an agency scene that is new to them.

“It opened up my mind to the media side of advertising and gave me a push to look more into it post-grad,” said Corrujedo.
