Leila Raines, a passionate golfer and PR Major, has spent her last four years at Michigan State University mastering what it takes to be a successful student athlete. From discovering her passion for golf at the age of eight to navigating collegiate athletics and academics, Raines’ journey has been far from simple. As she neared her final semester of college, Raines reflected on the challenges and achievements that have defined her journey.

Making Sacrifices and Balancing Academics

Entering her freshman year in 2020, Raines admits that she was blindsided by what it takes to be a successful student athlete. While there are many exciting opportunities that come with playing a college level sport, it is not always as glamorous as it seems.

“Yes, we get to wear cool gear and travel to some pretty good places, but being a student athlete comes with many restless hours, as well. Balancing academics, making sacrifices and constantly practicing is much harder than many may realize,” said Raines.

Despite the initial challenges, Raines eventually became accustomed to her rigorous schedule by learning the importance of communication. Regular contact with professors, academic advisors and utilizing tutoring services allowed her to succeed in classes. Although being a student athlete comes with several challenges, Raines says that the experience has taught her invaluable life lessons.

The Intersection of Golf and PR

Initially, Raines was drawn to the field of public relations due to her love of social media and her interest in how organizations represent themselves. What she didn’t expect was how her experiences in golf and PR would impact one another.

“Golf has given me several traits — integrity, perseverance, leadership and a strong work ethic — each of which have helped me succeed in PR,” said Raines.

By combining her two passions, she has been able to excel in both areas. In addition to incorporating lessons from golf into her PR career, Raines has also taken advantage of her PR skills to promote herself as an athlete on social media.

Looking Back on Her Journey

Overall, Raines says that being a part of the golf team has been extremely rewarding. She has had incredible opportunities and even got to experience winning the BIG 10 Championships her freshman year.

“Yes, there are tough times along the way, but the people I have gotten to meet, the friendships I have been able to make, and the memories will truly last me a lifetime,” said Raines.
