A Tale of Two Tracks

Choosing a degree field can be a daunting task for any college student. Advertising majors have a couple options and The Brief is here to lay out the possible paths. The Creative Advertising Track is ideal for students with an interest in bringing ideas to life. For those who want to make advertisements – from concept to execution, the Creative Track allows students to learn how to develop ad content, including copy and design. The Advertising Management track allows students to take courses that prepare them for jobs in managerial roles, with a focus on strategic thinking, research and analytical skills. AD+PR Faculty Experts Weigh in on Vaping Issues Related to Advertising

Vaping continues making headlines due to state-level bans on selling certain flavors and a proposed ban at the national level. Much of this talk has centered around minors using e-cigarette products, which is believed to have started as a result of targeted advertising. Nora Rifon, Ph.D., a professor with MSU’s Department of Advertising + Public Relations, has spent her career studying consumer behavior. The “10th Wonder” of AD+PR: Dr. Teresa Mastin

Behind every organization, there is a leader working to make a difference. At MSU, departmental leaders are selected not only based on their resumes, but their ideas and goals for their respective departments. The Department of AD+PR is under the leadership of chairperson, Dr. Teresa Mastin. Mastin assumed the position of 10th chairperson in June 2018 and is making an impact on MSU AD+PR. Not only is she the 10th chairperson, but she is an alumna, continues to teach, and do research. [read more]

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Kjerstin Thorson

Kjerstin Thorson, Ph.D., is one of six 2020 Teacher-Scholar Award winners university-wide, recognized for her notable impact as a researcher and teacher of undergraduates and graduate students alike. Thorson comes from a public relations background, having worked in corporate communications in New York City for seven years at the start of her career. She worked for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia at the time leading up to Stewart’s legal troubles and eventual arrest. [read more]
